A truly adorable scene from Parliament yesterday has gone viral, after Speaker Trevor Mallard cradled an extremely drunk Shane Jones in his arms while the House was in session.

Loud “awwww”s could be heard around the chamber as the Regional Development Minister, absolutely tuckered from a long morning of heavy drinking, curled up in the speaker’s arms, and promptly went to sleep.

While technically a breach of Parliamentary protocol, no objections were heard as Mallard carefully rocked Jones off to sleep, wrapped in a green blanket.

Before he drifted off, Jones was heard mumbling for more bourbon, a request that was softly rejected by the Speaker.

“No, hush, hush, drink this,” he said, placing a water bottle up to Jones’s lips, causing him to groggily recoil in disgust. “You’ll regret it later tonight if you don’t drink this now.”

“House is in talky mode now, quiet, okay? There you go, there you go,” he added.

The display clearly left an impression on many MPs, including the Greens’ Golriz Ghahraman, who gushed about it on Twitter later that evening.
